I swear it might be easier to go out and acquire my own fucking 18th-century flintlock than to find one (1) image on Google of a flintlock pistol from the top

https://images.plurk.com/4145ay6Sbed9sq67utc1zQ.png you know what. this will do.
skerple
it's only like 1/3 of the pistol but that will just have to fucking be okay.

There's a way to cheat for obscure model references, especially with things like guns.
Spider Hider
Lots of people make 3D models of stuff like that and distribute them for free. There are free programs that can let you look at them from all angles.
Spider Hider
Blender is free, though using it for that is vast overkill.
skerple
... That IS a good thought for later.

Just google free video game assets and there are these huge repositories of things. Weapons especially.

I also have to draw a curved sword in perspective for this commission and I am. Dreading that.
Spider Hider
A 3D model viewer is also real good for that. Takes a lot of setup and some expertise, but once you learn how you can import basically any character and equip them with whatever, pose them how you like, position the camera at any angle. Boom, custom reference pic.

I have not done any art in the longest time but when I was trying to teach myself 3D modeling I found it very handy for 2D references.
Spider Hider
That was years ago though. I think there are programs that are better geared to that specifically than a whole modeling environment like Blender now.

Yeah, Clip Studio comes with poseable 3d models and a ton of preset poses, and that's been REALLY helpful for me.

There you go!

It's kinda cumbersome and... of limited usefulness for furry characters... but it's there!
skerple
........god
skerple
I bet, of all things
skerple
Miku Miku Dance would be great for this...
skerple
yayyy I figured out how to get 3d models into CSP! sword has been positioned
skerple
man okay yeah I found a free flintlock model and now that I know how to import 3D assets that was so much easier
skerple
still kind of a pain to position but shockingly it's easier to mess with a 3d model than to try to build and position a model of a complex item in your head

Computers are wonderful. Sometimes.
