our county assessor decided it would be an A+ Excellent idea to lure women from the Marshall Islands over to the states where he could toss them in properties he owned in squalid conditions and sell their babies
Petersen’s attorney, Matthew Long, defended his client’s actions during a Tuesday court hearing in Phoenix as “proper business practices” and said they disagreed with the allegations. what
But today the county voted unanimously to put him on 120 days suspension without pay, which...for some fucking reason is literally the extent of what they can do at the county level
There's apparently no actual way to remove him, to the point that one of the state legislators is saying we need to get a bill drafted to let the county Board of Supervisors do exactly that when there's a situation like this and the assessor is very clearly not doing their job and/or needs to be gone yesterday
(since his arrest triggered an audit of everything on his work computers / email, and... well, since being elected, a whopping 5% of his files and emails are related to the actual job. The rest is largely related to his law practice dealing with bankruptcies and adoptions. So he's not even fucking doing what he's getting paid to do either)
And the nurses working the pregnancy ward in Salt Lake City also have some pretty strong arguments to make on the front of "your entire operation was shady as balls and immediately fails a smell test" considering they kept noticing random women being brought in by the exact same one
