[work] So this year I have taken a vacation to Seoul, Osaka and Shanghai. I have a vacation in a month to London and Iceland. I took time off to visit my folks in Texas on my birthday, and I have time off scheduled for Thanksgiving and Christmas to do the same. I......... still have 4 vacation days left. In addition to two weeks of sick time

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
I love working in California

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
For reference, when I worked in Texas (for a large wealthy financial firm no less) I got 12 days off. Period. That included my sick leave.

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
It was all one big pool called "PTO."

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
asldkfj woman I hate that emote

нєℓρ★нιкα

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
moa betta

нєℓρ★нιкα
:3

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
but yeah here we get 10 days of vacation (15 if you've been here 5-9 years, 20 after 10), and that's separate from the 4 floating holidays and 5 personal days we get

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
which is all separate from the 11 sick days we get

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
they technically accure over time but NBCUniversal has...... no internal way to track time

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
I was literally told by HR to just maintain a spreadsheet between me and my manager and my manager doesnt give a fuck

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
so they all just accrue at the beginning of the year and when we leave the company we get our max vacation time paid out

нєℓρ★нιкα
universal/comcast/dreamworks/those guys are all really good about PTO. like disney only gives 2 floating holidays and 0 personal days, then i think it's 10 sick days and probably 2 weeks vacation to start and then that accrues with time

🦎 ᴘʀᴏᴘᴀɢᴀɴᴅᴀ
JFC

🦎 ᴘʀᴏᴘᴀɢᴀɴᴅᴀ
It's almost like they care

🦎 ᴘʀᴏᴘᴀɢᴀɴᴅᴀ
I have the 12 days here

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
yeah it's really weird

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
it's almost like they really believe in work/life balance

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
and get this: we aren't even guilted or punished for using it

🦎 ᴘʀᴏᴘᴀɢᴀɴᴅᴀ

🦎 ᴘʀᴏᴘᴀɢᴀɴᴅᴀ
What's the catch....

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
There ..... isn't one?

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
And get this: even though I have a work phone and am reachable on vacation they don't ........ bother me

ellie
sounds fake

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
its wild

ʟᴇɢᴀʟʟʏ sᴏᴜᴘ
20 vacation days is the bare legal minimum you get here (if you work full-time)

ʟᴇɢᴀʟʟʏ sᴏᴜᴘ
depending on the collective bargaining agreements for the sector you work in, it might be more.

ʟᴇɢᴀʟʟʏ sᴏᴜᴘ
If you get sick during your time off, you are supposed to report that to your company, and you get your time off compensated.

ellie
oh where i live, unions are Evil

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
yeah well america doesnt believe in mandatory time off even for folks who give birth because freedom

Ri
...this makes me like my job for time off. rotating pass days, 11 holidays, 15 vacay from 1-5 years, and I forget how it goes up from there but it rolls over if you don't use it all. I know next year in March I get 5 more days because it ends 5 years for me.

Ri
the only thing we have to burn are the holidays (3 can carry into the next year, but they have to be used by end of March iirc)

Ri
sick accrues slower, but eh

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
Yeah the above doesn't include our work holidays either

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
dunno how many of those we get, I'd have to count

sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
10 officially, but it usually ends up being around 12. (Like when a holiday is on a tuesday my HR department emails us like "don't show up on monday it's a holiday")

(•─•)/")
I have PTO and I hate it. I have to weigh every illness or appointment I have to make during work hours against vacation and it definitely creates a culture of coming to work sicinanr getting everyone else sick

(•─•)/")
I have 10 holidays and 144 hours accruing evenly throughout the year. it goes up by 8 hours every 2 years which means I'll be 152 next ywart

(•─•)/")
and I can only flex time within two weeks. husband gets sick leave and only two weeks of vacation but when he feels like shit he stays home and he can build up time in advance

(•─•)/")
and I wouldn't have to be like "I need to keep a week of vacation rolling over in case I get sick" idk the guys all love it but they probably aren't taking care of sick children and getting sick themselves that's their wives job

Ri
see, the NICE thing is the time we get. the downside? for 2-10 shift, there are 9 slots available. Outside of military leave, sick time, or pass days, the only way to take a day is if there's a slot available or it's a CN (which is not ideal because those count against you for things such as anticipating leave or getting a stress day).

Ri
if you're a Sgt, there are 2 slots.

Ri
on 6-2 shift, it's 3 Sgt slots and 10 CO1 slots.

Ri
AND bidding vacation is done by seniority on each shift.

Ri
so those just starting? hope you don't want anything in the summer.

Ri
and trainees are advised not to take any vacation days and just use their holidays their first year (because they can't anticipate leave, so if something big happens and they have no time, they're screwed)

Ri
after the slots fill, there are pencil slots. To get Christmas this year, if I didn't have it off already, I'd be 15th in pencil. and that's if i'm lucky.

Ri
that means 15 people have to run out of time and be unable to take the day for me to get it
