BANNED CLOWN
I really like Vattu but I have to go back every few months and reread the current chapter or even the whole thing because the slow updates mean the interconnected politics become sort of decontextualised if I don't.
BANNED CLOWN
I don't even know anyone else reading it, lmao.... so many people were disappointed when The Order of Tales wasn't as surrealistic or dreamlike as Rice Boy but then Vattu promised me politics and societies and hot damn is it delivering
BANNED CLOWN
I think in a lot of ways Vattu is more like Rice Boy than The Order of Tales was, but it's still more like The Order of Tales than it is Rice Boy?
Falcon McRaven
Doesn't it update just about weekly?
Falcon McRaven
It is very possible I am wrong though but I agree with all the sentiments here.
BANNED CLOWN
Yes, it does! Which is honestly impressive, it's so visually rich? But there's so much going on that once a week means that it can take months for payoff on a plot point first introduced.... years ago and returned to just recently in narrative terms. So I have to reread occasionally or I'm like "this is interesting but I'm missing something here."
Falcon McRaven
Oh yeah I guess I just don't think of weekly as "slow" but you are absolutely right in how it effects the narrative serially.
BANNED CLOWN
YEAH no god it's not slow in the sense of... how much work goes into each page.
Falcon McRaven
Yeah I misread the point there but yes there is SO much to Vattu I love it.
BANNED CLOWN
sdfmkasld SORRY THAT WAS MY BAD but yes good god I'M GLAD SOMEONE ELSE LOVES IT
BANNED CLOWN
I think it'
BANNED CLOWN
Oops
BANNED CLOWN
I think it's under-hyped tbh
Falcon McRaven
Vattu is interesting to me because it is SO MUCH BIGGER than Riceboy or OoT were
BANNED CLOWN
RIGHT
Falcon McRaven
It's such a different experience, but also OoT/Riceboy were both already complete by the time I discovered them.
Falcon McRaven
My hardcopy Riceboy and OoT books are some of my most prized books.
Falcon McRaven
I also need to check out the Island Book at some point.
BANNED CLOWN
I found Rice Boy................. god, it definitely wasn't done yet, and I can say it was a lot easier to just drift through as it updated?
BANNED CLOWN
OoT was less so and I think people were frustrated by that, I know Evan Dahm had to make a post like "hey it actually feels not great for people to say they think Rice Boy is better all the time? OoT is more of a purposeful story on my part and I like to think it represents progress in my art."
Falcon McRaven
Oof, yeah I can absolutely see that happening.
BANNED CLOWN
Yeah.... I remember reading that post and being very :[ because at the time I wasn't sure where OoT was GOING but it seemed pretty rude for people to be saying that about... an unfinished work compared to his first completed work??
BANNED CLOWN
I should reread OoT
BANNED CLOWN
I was in a rocky place when I read it and I don't think I appreciated it as much as I could have
BANNED CLOWN
BANNED CLOWN
I do remember really loving the black and white execution a LOT
Falcon McRaven
Riceboy and OoT were both really impactful artistic inspirations for me for entirely different reasons and they are both so excellent
Falcon McRaven
YES THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PARTS ABOUT IT
Falcon McRaven
It's so visually clear!! while still being super detailed!
BANNED CLOWN
IT'S SO FUCKING--YEAH
BANNED CLOWN
It was a treat to read just to look at the pages, if that makes sense. I don't remember the story nearly as well as I wish I did but I remember the art very well and. /chef's kiss meme etc
Falcon McRaven
I LOVE heavy blacks it's something that definitely impacted my like. I hate calling it 'tribal' but it's the quickest descriptor. that style.
Falcon McRaven
And OoT used them so well.
Falcon McRaven
The story was also really tight and Koark is such a good protagonist.
BANNED CLOWN
God. Yeah I hate the "tribal label" but HEAVY BLACKS ARE GORGEOUS and every time an artist goes all in and pulls it off I'm just hooting and hollering in the peanut gallery
BANNED CLOWN
Maybe I'll reread it this week. Then I can hoot and holler about the storytelling too.
Falcon McRaven
One of my other favorite webcomics (String Theory) started in BW and is now in color but the artist kept using the heavy blacks and it's one of my favorite looks.
BANNED CLOWN
OH YOU READ STRING THEORY TOO
BANNED CLOWN
PLANTS MY HANDS ON YOUR SHOULDERS,,
Falcon McRaven
YES
Falcon McRaven
IT'S ONE OF MY FAVES
BANNED CLOWN
I started back when it was in b&w and I follow the artist on Twitter so I get to eyeball all the extra art he produces and it's SO GOOD. I love his lines and lineweight.
BANNED CLOWN
It's such a good balance of supernatural shit and human drama
BANNED CLOWN
Narratively
Falcon McRaven
MMmm Yes. On both counts, I love the linework and the narrative.
