It's a super dumb complaint but God it drives me nuts when a fic really obviously did not even bother with any research when it's ostensibly period-ish and/or located in a different area from them, much less culture.

I started to read a fic where Bucky as Winter Soldier kidnapped Tony when he killed Howard and Maria. Okay, not too awful so far.

And then it has them hitting El Paso, near close call at being found out, so he decides to cross the border with the kid in the middle of the desert in the heat for maximum ultra danger drama.

The borders were stupid open up until the mid 2000s

No one would question a man and a kid crossing into Mexico much less check them for papers

Absolutely no one would care in the 70s

much less the comment about border patrol caring about only Mexicans crossing into the US because during this time frame border towns were pretty much super open my god

they are more likely to be caught in the desert

there's even a whole trope about people fleeing their situation to Mexico!

like in this case it I am aware it super annoys me because it's a ten minute research thing (if even) and pretty much about an area I live in but it's one of those things that jolt me out of pretty much any reading based media consumption and bothers me the rest of a movie.

Artell : Yeah, they're using it but... not accurately at all.
Artell
Oh, right. There's a reason people did that and it was because it was easy!
