seen on FB: "I don't understand why people have such a hard time paying off student loans and if someone with a degree is working at Starbucks they made bad life choices. I think it's too easy to get loans and they should be more exclusive. You should only be able to get one of you can show proof that you can pay it off."
like first of all jobs aren't always easy to come by. I am super fucking fortunate that I managed to get a job straight out of college, but I know that for a very large percentage that is not the case, and it's certainly not for lack of trying
and also are they really suggesting that you should be able to show that you will be capable to pay tens of thousands of dollars worth of loans at 18 years old??? like the fuck family did you come from that you could even do that?
like yes, the student debt crisis real, but honestly the way that society is gone now you need to have a college degree to get anything, at least in the US.
and then a lot of companies, like big businesses, you can get a bachelor's and go up to a certain level in the hierarchy prevent to go further you need at least a masters.
so like I get the whole "we need to do something about this part". like yes students are graduating college with exorbitant amounts to pay the off, butif you're working a job that doesn't need a degree for the most part it's going to be minimum wage and then you'll just never be able to show that proof or save up the money to pay for college
also by saying that you need to be able to show proof, excluding a large chunk of the population based on their socioeconomic status. people shouldn't be denied schooling because they can't afford it.
that's how you prevent anybody from moving up in society. and on top of that there are many many people in the world who done amazing things who come from that background, so by excluding them you are potentially hindering the advancement of society or technology or what have you
yeah. like I almost wasn't able to afford to go to my last semester and the only reason I even made it to that point was loans. I was a manager for two years before that. like. it's ridiculous how expensive it is
