I'm real bummed that big takeaway of generic "cyberpunk" has somehow distilled into "Do bOdy mOdiFicAtionS mAke uS leSs hUMan???" and not "Do corporations deserve the same rights as people and how do we hold onto our humanity in the face if moving closer and closer to becoming mere data points in a system that values commomidfication over everything else"
boodle boy
BUT WHATEVER
🐅 its harry
to be fair thats been Part Of Cyberpunk for ever
boodle boy
Yeah definitely, transhumansim thematically definitely has, I just don't like that somehow an ableist take on it has become one of the biggest dominators
🐅 its harry
no i mean like the whole "oooohhh you have a robot arm you are Less Than Human" thing, specifically, has been part of it for ever
boodle boy
Yeah, I agree! I'm saying I'm sad that's the thing that we decided was the Thing to Preserve in the genre
🐅 its harry
GOTCHA
boodle boy
SORRY IF THAT WAS UNCLEAR
🐅 its harry
I JUST, FROM WHAT I HAVE CONSUMED
🐅 its harry
it does very much seem to have been baked into the foundations
🐅 its harry
& would require like active work to subvert, rather than it being just one take of many that 'somehow' gained prevalence where previously it didnt?
boodle boy
YEAH ITS IN A LOT OF IT. I guess it does depend on your take too ....like Blade Runner is kind of quintessential cyberpunk and I would say it's very much about how "humanity" =/= your body (ie/ we are meant to empathise with replicants)
boodle boy
BUT IM SURE THERE ARE OTHER BORING READS ON BLADE RUNNER LIKE "DECKARD IS A HUMAN"
🐅 its harry

ᴇᴍᴀɴᴀᴛᴏʀ
I don't like the transhumanism aspect because I don't think it's aged well, yeah.
🐅 its harry
but yeah i am def with you on wishing we had, a different mainstream cyberpunk
boodle boy
tbf I feel like there's genuinely been very little good cyberpunk ever...I just feel like we live in a time rife really interesting conversations about corporations, and technology, which were both big hallmarks of the genre
boodle boy
But it feels like it just.....hasn't evolved?
🐅 its harry
yyyeah
🐅 its harry
p much
boodle boy
It's a genre defined more by A Look than anything else and that's dumb
boodle boy
BECAUSE MOST GENRES ARE NOT DEFINIED BY A SPECIFIC AESTHETIC
🐅 its harry
you kind of look at old cyberpunk stuff thats full of .... leering voyeurism about imagined body modification and r just like Why Have We Not Moved Any Further Than This
boodle boy
(insert my TED talk about how Black Mirror is the most cyberpunk thing being made rn and it doesn't look anything like that)
boodle boy
boodle boy
someone linked me this just now and it kind of sums up exacrly what I'm talking about:

🐅 its harry
YEAH i mean tho ive been seeing people say this a lot recently and it definitely suggests a vision of Early Cyberpunk that i dont think exists
boodle boy
Like, replace body mods with modern day privacy and you have ripe content
boodle boy
But NO
boodle boy
Right
🐅 its harry
like im sure there has always been cyberpunk stuff that didnt suck in this specific way but there absolutely always has also been tons of stuff that did
boodle boy
Honestly...repo? Was an interesting semi successful version of this?
boodle boy
Not....the musical
plurkishdelight
ty for clarifying i just gave you a stink eye
boodle boy
SOMEONE RETELL REPO FOR 2019 BECAUSE THE IDEA OF "YOUR HEALTH BEING SOMETHING BIG COMPANIES WILL TAKE CARE OF UNTIL YOU CAN NO LONGER MAKE PAYMENTS" SURE IS REAL
plurkishdelight
YEAH
boodle boy
A lot of comics definitely did cyberpunk better
plurkishdelight
Doktor Sleepless, for all it's white privledge boy flaws, did very accurately point out the dangers of over reliance on netowrked technology
plurkishdelight
this does not lessen my absolute dislike of doktor sleepless tho
boodle boy
Also Transmetropolitan

𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐃!!!!!
Repo was more woke than it realized. Like for real.
𝖓𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞👁️𝖙𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞
I think ultimately "cyberpunk" as it was is no longer socially relevant and so if you are going to make a point about anything you kind of have to shed a lot of those basic cyberpunk concepts and move forward
𝖓𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞👁️𝖙𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞
i think we have different questions now
𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐃!!!!!
I admit I do love the aesthetic and themes, but it has not moved past the 80's/early 90's in terms of questions it asks.
𝖓𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞👁️𝖙𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞
"does a robot arm make you less human" is a useless question because, to me anyway, the answer is pretty much flat out no with no real room for argument
𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐃!!!!!
Also: we are kinda living in that world now, so all the old social commentary doesn't mean shit.
𝖓𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞👁️𝖙𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞
LOL yeah
𝖓𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞👁️𝖙𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞
I liked Repo the non musical a fair deal except for when it got all weird at the end
🐅 its harry
yeah like even fucking medical prosthetics aside its like. people irl get facial implants to look like a lizard man. people irl get modifications to look increasingly like their romantic partner until you cant tell which features came from which one originally or whatever. Calm Down
𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐃!!!!!
YEP. "does a robot arm make you less human?" no. also gimme six of em.
🐅 its harry
ultimately i just dont think anybody should bother doing cyberpunk in 2019 if theyre not a trans furry
🐅 its harry
im a bit joking but im also a bit not
𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐃!!!!!
The people that ask these question literally sound like the people offended when people get plastic surgery. Like that is literally our robot arm.
𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐃!!!!!
If you don't think a person getting work done, then you shouldn't ask those questions in a story.
𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐀𝐑𝐃!!!!!
seriously, the musical Repo is just getting more relevant by the year with health care and people literally being addicted to plastic surgery
𝖓𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞👁️𝖙𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞
the corporations part is really the bit of cyberpunk that is still relevant
plurkishdelight
^ that
boodle boy
put the punk in cyberpunk
boodle boy
But yeah, again. Black Mirror is the modern evolution of this genre tbh
boodle boy
strip away all the aesthetics, replace with modern, relatable questions
𝖓𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞👁️𝖙𝖎𝖉𝖉𝖞
yeah i agree
