Last night I finally saw The Boy and the Beast

It is good. Really good. Some tears may have been shed. Animation was stunning. I definitely feel like it would hold up well on the rewatch.

Also, I look forward to the day WizardRandom plays Rabbit Lord as an NPC, because we all know it's going to happen.

what is The Boy and the Beast?

shinotenshi22 an anime film that won a bunch of awards when it came out in 2015. Imagine Spirited Away, but instead of a girl working in a magical bathhouse, it's a runaway boy becomes the pupil of a temperamental bear spirit because he wants to become strong, and they're both loud and stubborn and temperamental

It's a really great, thematically dense story about teachers and pupils, mentors and successors, and what it means to be a father figure

you compared it to Spirited Away. (that's my fav. Ghibli film okay?)

It's the best example of two characters who yell at each other all the time about all their faults, but only because they HONESTLY, DEEPLY care about each other and it really is their language of love and encouragement. Like REALLY.

(Also, like...I could tell that Spirited Away, and Ghibli in general, was a big visual influence)

(It has a bunch of folklore references, the main quartet of the story are basically the journey to the west group)
