I definitely maintain that if anyone would have the restraint to preserve the timeline, it'd be Steve. And if his passions for doing THE RIGHT THING ever threatened to overcome him (and they would, repeatedly), I think there is no one better than Peggy to tell him "NO." and preserve the timeline.
someone on tumblr made a fairly compelling point that the reason Bucky was so chill about sending Sam over to talk to Old Man Steve (without stepping up to say anything himself) was because he HAD been rescued and had lived out a life with them and was cool with it all.
Because there is NO WAY IN ALL OF THE VARIOUS HELLS that Peggy would do ANYTHING to upset her chances of Steve coming to the moment where he can go back in time and be with her.
And then you run into the cringeworthy moment when you realize that Bruce made pretty promises to the Ancient One, but there is absolutely a timeline where she's right and giving up the stone fucked her timeline
