[Sort of work relared?] How would you write out 123,456.78 as a number for a check and what country do you live in. We are trying to figure out if I'm just weird or if if there's an American thing happening here.

𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒅
... see I'm a weirdo so I can't personally say what I'd write out cuz it's not the standard
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/9050119-medium49246575.gif)
𝑹𝒆𝒅𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒐𝒅
But the American standard is one hundred twenty three thousand, four hundred fifty six & 78/100

Ri
one hundred twenty-three thousand four hundred fifty-six & 78/xx is how i'd do it
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
They were very weirded out by my lack of ands and the faction

𝓟𝓢𝓛☕📔𝓟𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓬𝓮𝓼𝓼

That is so weird that you do that...

Jemisaur
one hundred and twenty three thousand, four hundred and fifty six dollars and seventy eight cents

ᴘɪɴᴇ ᴛʀᴇᴇ ↟
one hundred twenty three thousand, four hundred and fifty six dollars 78/100 is how i owuld write that I think 8|a

papermint tiger
you don't say and that's silly
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/9113972-medium5015582.gif)
papermint tiger
'and' is for decimals, but in the case of a check you just do the fraction
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
They do say and over here though! Or in my office at least they di
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
Because that's the first thing they told me to do was to say the number out loud and I didn't it without ands
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
And they went huh...
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/9113972-medium5015582.gif)
papermint tiger
like throughout the number? see, when i was in school i was told repeatedly in my math classes to never, ever say 'and' unless i was indicating a decimal
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
And because of the way my dyslexic brain works I wasnt sure if I was missing the ands because I'm so focused on getting the numbers to come out correctly and not mixed around
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/9113972-medium5015582.gif)
papermint tiger
yeah no i think Americans are taught to never say 'and' in big numbers. Or at least not write it on checks!
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
But no, pretty sure it's an Aussie VS Amurica thing
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
Lol and then they got to my fraction and were like wtf is this?!!!?
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
We googled that one and I was like SEE THAT ONE AT LEAST ISN'T JUST ME
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/9113972-medium5015582.gif)
papermint tiger
it's very typical in america! I actually write it so the little number is above the big number, let me see if i can find a check to take a pic...
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
Yeah I write it as 00/100 for zero cents or 42/100 for forty two cents
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8356727-medium18.gif)
Tisiphone
when there are no cents its' also not uncommon to write "X dollars only"
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8356727-medium18.gif)
Tisiphone
but yeah, australians just basically write the number out in full no fractions
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
And add a bunch of ands
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)

![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8356727-medium18.gif)
Tisiphone
well yeah. you're writing the number the way it's said.
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8356727-medium18.gif)
Tisiphone
legal transcription has that as policy too
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
Yeah, but I don't naturally say it with the and
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8356727-medium18.gif)
Tisiphone
then you wouldn't write it with the and either! fuck everyone else.
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8356727-medium18.gif)
Tisiphone
most people say and here, but you're not doing it wrong if you don't include ands on your cheque
![](https://avatars.plurk.com/8197348-medium10.gif)
Zigzag Stampede
Haha, yeah, I'm not in trouble or anything but we had a fun omg... There's more to this culture divide then my food being full of unneeded sugar!!!
