1. Does your character like their name? How was it chosen? Would they choose another if given the opportunity?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
He very much does like his name! It was picked by either Bendix or the Gardener when they remade him (I'd like to think Bendix), but he's come to fully embrace it.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
There was a point in time where he wasn't sure about himself, and that included his name, back when he first met Apollo and wound up joining Stormwatch (and as a result fell too hard into Stormwatch and it's mission statement, but that's another discussion for another time), because he felt that it made him abnormal
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Not that, on the whole, he minded being abnormal much, but as he was trying to figure himself out, he decided to come up with a "normal" name for when he wasn't wearing the carbon fiber costume, and went with Lucas Trent.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
He came to really hate the alias and the lies that it represented, and ultimately trashed it and fully embraced his name as a part of who he is. To compensate for that "in armor/out of armor" feeling, he started going by M to friends.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
In MoM, he's had exactly 1 other alias, but it's only because "Midnighter" isn't accepted on an ID and sometimes a guy just wants to get into a bar. His fake ID says Mark Cross, but he'd never call himself that.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
14. How good is your character at seeing things from other people's perspectives? Is there an example of a perspective they were unable to understand?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
This... is a work in progress for M. He tries to see things from other people's perspectives, and to a point he can see them, but there's almost like a block between seeing it and understanding it.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
(If this person is hurting other people then 99% of the time fuck you you're done end of story, but there are exceptions.)
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
(In Midnighter 2 there was a woman named Marina trying to kill some execs, but once M figured out their neglence killed her husband and a bunch of others, well he lost his sympathy for the victims, he convinced Marina to turn herself in, was the first person to pick her up from jail, and is still friends with her post Midnighter and Apollo)
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
The problem stems not from him not wanting to see the other side, btu because of his upbringing being so drastically different from other people. Any memories of being "normal" were wiped when he became Midnighter, and from then on a lot of his life focused solely around death.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
It wasn't until meeting Andrew and the rest of Stormwatch did he ever attempt being normal. That's not to say he didn't grow up from a pre-teen murder machine to a 20 or 30 something as an actual robot, he developed a very deep sense of compassion for people, but relating to them is still this hurdle he's trying to figure out
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
And it's this disconnect he's still working on
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Even if it sometimes leads to him talking about gory details of someone's death to a small child because he thinks it will help them get closure
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
(I... think that answered that and I didn't wildly veer off topic)
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
21. What is your character most insecure about?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Front and center is definitely his relationship with Apollo, both MoM-Midnighter and canon!DC-Midnighter.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
While canon DC Midnighter does ultimately get back together with Apollo again, and their relationship is happy and loving, he's not so much of an idiot to not remember how badly he fucked it up the first time, and there's a worry that he will absolutely do it again, even though he's working hard not to, and to let things happen organically.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
MoM Midnighter is in more or less the same place, only without the security of knowing he gets back with Andrew when he goes home, because as far as he knows he doesn't. His relationship with Apollo in MoM had it's ups and downs, and just when he thought they were in a good place, Andrew ported out.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
He's now very insecure about the idea of a. Andrew coming back and not remembering their relationship last time and therefore having to apologize and make it up to him all over again, and b. Going home and never seeing Andrew again after making up with him in MoM because he's a fucking moron who screwed up big time in his canon.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
MoM Midnighter is also a bit insecure about befriending people in general, as it's getting harder and harder for him to see people constantly leaving.

ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
I didn't forget about this, I just ran out of brainpower yesterday
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
and then I've been busy on and off all day today.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Going to get through these!
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
6. How would you describe your character's anger? Does it blind them, or does it clarify things?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
For a guy who was canonically offered a red lantern ring... M does not typically get angry all that often.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
If it's related to him personally, he tends to let things slide off his back, from betrayals to modifications, he talks about the weird shit in his life with a sort of detachment.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
That's not to say that he's particularly fond of them, but he accepts them as facets of his life and refuses to dwell on it.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
(That said, he's not completely turn the other cheek; he did crack Prometheus' skull open after learning he was a scumbag.)
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Typically though, M gets angry on behalf of other people. People that get screwed over that didn't deserve it. He lets that anger guide him and his actions, but he never allows it to overwhelm him. Everything is a potential weapon, even anger. It's all in how you use it.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
I don't think he's ever been blinded by anger, though the closest he ever came was when Bendix had Andrew killed by proxy (for obvious reasons), and even then he was too busy moving forward to let that anger overflow
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
I think a lot of it has to do with M's computer brain, but not in the sense of him letting it guide his actions. For all of M's life, he's had this thing in the back of his head, feeding him odds and showing him potential outcomes. He's grown up valuing logic over emotion. Emotion is important, yes, but the next step, his next move, that comes more naturally
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Emotion is newer, something he's still trying to fully understand. Even though he's got a decent grasp on it and when it's all right to let it go, he's still far more comfortable working with logic.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
7. What defines your character's goals? Do they have ambitions for themselves, the world, their loved ones, or are they just coasting?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
M's goal's really haven't deviated from the ones his "parents" gave him when he was young:
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
be the mongoose in the room full of vipers
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Over time, he's honed what that means to him, and keeps his focus on people he feels deserves it, from drug dealers to corrupt CEOs.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
The fact that he was created to be this monster that he knows he is is what drives him. He knows he can't change who he is, nor does he want to, so he keeps that narrow focus. He creates an asset network of people to let him know about crimes that are actually important.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
In MoM, he's even deviated from his methods slightly because he knows that if he just starts killing every scumbag that deserves it the way he did back home, it wouldn't just be his ass on the line, it would probably be all of the imPorts that feel the backlash.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Unlike his Wildstorm counterpart, he has no lofty "better world" ambitions (in fact, he's cynical enough to believe there's no such "better world" coming), but rather his focus is solely on individuals in shitty situations that he can help.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
In terms of his personal life, he's only started to figure out what that looked like in the past 5 years or so (I consider it 2 years in canon, 3 years in MoM), and so that's still a bit nebulous, but is starting to take shape.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
He wants to keep friends (barring them porting out), and learning how to relax and do normal things, even though he himself isn't a normal person
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
And is still trying to figure out how to blend those two contradictory parts of his life.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
12. How far would your character go for what they believe in? Do they believe the ends justify the means?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
I think canon has pretty explicitly shown the answer is pretty damn far
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
He tried to kill Prometheus even if that meant completely eradicating his past, and literally traveled to hell to fight the devil to get Andrew back.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
He's got no qualms about killing anyone who hurts an innocent, and that includes high-powered CEOs (though he's only shown maiming one).
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
As for whether or not the ends justify the means, he wouldn't have so many dead bodies in his wake if he didn't think that way. He'd be going the Batman route instead (and god knows that doesn't work).
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
2. How does your character generally show affection?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Playful, teasing sarcasm is the way that comes most natural to him. He's a naturally sarcastic person, and so it's the farthest in his comfort zone.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
As he becomes closer with someone, he shows it by taking an interest in something that they're interested in, like playing pool with Tony, or jogging with Jason, or camping with Matt, or cooking with Andrew.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
With someone he loves, he isn't very touchy-feely with them in the sense of holding hands, or running his hands through their hair, but I think that has more to do with the fact that touching to him is so equated with killing that while he's all right with doing all of those things, it doesn't come naturally to him
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
That said, when the moods becomes intimate.... well then he's extremely touchy feely.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
10. If your character could change one thing in their life, what would it be?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Oh, fucking things up with Andrew. Hands down. He'd go back to before he introduced himself as Lucas Trent and be more honest with him from the beginning. Barring that... at the very least having more courage to stay and fix things after finally admitting to him the truth.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
22. How strong is your character's sense of identity? Is it ingrained, or is it bound to the things they do?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Ingrained. Definitely. The Midnighter part of his existence, the mongoose in the room full of vipers part, that's always been there. That part of him has never waivered.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
It was literally programmed into him, though he honed exactly what that programming meant to his own sense of morals.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
The M part of him, the guy outside the work clothes, that took a little bit of work to get where he was.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
The Midnighter that forces himself onto Stormwatch, that man was nearly entirely bound to being a part of Stormwatch. He joined to get closer to Andrew, and wound up being consumed by the mission that Stormwatch represented, to the point of neglecting Andrew from time to time.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
I headcanon it's because Midnighter had no idea who he was outside of ripping out spines, and for the first time in his life Stormwatch gave him a purpose. But rather than approach it like a job or a life mission like the rest of them, he got drawn to it like a moth to the flame and it nearly consumed him.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
It's why I think he left, because he realized that it wasn't healthy for him to keep doing it. Because he didn't know who he was.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
From Stormwatch it became who he was with Andrew. The lie of Lucas Trent. It's why he ran when he came to that realization, that he had no idea who he was as a person outside of being with Andrew.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
He forced himself to figure out who M was. Not Midnighter the killing machine. Not Midnighter the loyal member of Stormwatch. Certainly not Lucas Trent.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
It took a lot of stumbling, but he finally got there, and who he is is a part of him, rather than what surrounds him being who he is.
