Very much like Nick in that he gets by through hustling, but when he gets arrested in Ankh Morpork, Lord Vetinari gives him the option of death or revitalizing the long-defunct post office.

I'm intrigued!

I dunno how familiar you are with the Discworld series, but "Going Postal" is the book that introduces him, and it can stand pretty well on its own.

I am very, very slightly familiar, tbh.

ngl, I would recommend Discworld to anyone at any time with the slightest provocation

It is incredibly intelligent fantasy, with characters who act like real people, for better and worse

I might add the series to my efforts to Read Books Again.
