I feel like "Small squad of cool gun guys mows down waves of aliens" has been done a lot and you really need to put a fresh spin on it to not be dull as hell

Have them following along overhead providing close air support, avoiding missile turrets, dodging enemy interceptors, and flying in to pick you all up at the end

Like there's a ton of games where you have a bit where you have to hold your position at the evac point and fight off waves of badguys
