I like XKCD but sometimes it kind of feels like the dude is being willfully dense
Quinn Angstrom
why do people like action movies, dangerous things happen in them and dangerous things are bad
Quinn Angstrom
I'm not saying that everyone should like horror movies but like, the general appeal is not that hard to comprehend
Quinn Angstrom
you watch horror movies in order to practice being scared for the coming of the Fear King at the end of October
GAY TENNA?
i kind of like, agree with this strip in the sense that
GAY TENNA?
"horror movies" are just becoming increasingly SAW-like
Quinn Angstrom
are they?
GAY TENNA?
or at least, that's my impression?
GAY TENNA?
like
GAY TENNA?
maybe they're just the ones with the most exposure but
Quinn Angstrom
the last year has given us Get Out, IT, and A Quiet Place, all of them very high-profile spook movies with very little in the way of blood and gore
GAY TENNA?
i had literally not heard of a quiet place until just now but i'll give you the other two
Quinn Angstrom
it's very possible that it just depends on what circles you travel what's visible
Quinn Angstrom
I do hate Saw-alikes
GAY TENNA?
ough, yeah, maybe that's it, sis loves slasher flicks
GAY TENNA?
i like horror movies, but not the slasher subgenre
Quinn Angstrom
experiencing tension and shock in a context where you know that you aren't in real danger can be fun in the same way that fight scenes in movies are fun but watching actual violence isn't
Niamh Vibes
how does this comic not describe almost every movie that has tension or drama
penis bacon
Yeah there's absolute demarcation lines between slashers, murderporn, and horror-thrillers.
penis bacon
You can do a slasher flick that isn't murderporn, but most cinematographers don't
penis bacon
Also, I think literally everybody I know who loves slasher flicks does so for the sheer camp value because those plots turn into absolute nonsense approximately all of the time
EsperBot
Honestly if there's a current trend in horror films it's 'jump scare films'
penis bacon
I feel like jump scares are a tool instead of a genre but yeah I'd agree that horror is leaning too heavily on those in broad strokes
BF
The half-joke I always make is that I love horror because it’s distracting from the anxiety of my actual life
BF
Good horror makes me spend a couple of hours being scared of vampires or whatever instead of losing my job, never reaching my full potential, dying alone, etc
BF
It’s kinda like a fear detox
:)
re: the comic--looks like SOMEONE hasn't suffered from extreme longterm apathy! bring on the spoops.
Hazard Kitten
Yea Munroe can be irritatingly obtuse
Hazard Kitten
And he's one of those STEM snots on top of it
Echo
On one hand, yeah, this is a little obtuse- but on the other, I have to admit that this is the exact way I have always felt about horror movies.
Echo
I don't understand why it's fun??? Being scared by a horror movie feels bad and awful and I hate it.
Echo
Which doesn't mean that horror movies are bad or that they aren't great art or a lot of fun for other people- they clearly are, and that's great, so I just try to stay in my lane and not bother people about it.
Echo
It's not my thing, but not everything has to be my thing. There are plenty of other things out there for me, other people who actually enjoy this experience can have this one.
