[bleach] [why is this all I post about now] Watched movies 3 and 4 with Ken last night
So, first off, Ken calls the series "Brave Souls" and I never correct him because it's funny
Second thing is, after art school I can definitely say that 4 is just ABSOLUTELY artisticly superior to 3. It's really kinda amazing.
3 has a ton of wonky shots, no color coordination, bad designs, alien bug people faces, no shot composition. It looks like a filler episode puffed full of more air.
Like over all, it really just screams "cheap anime episode".
Dark Rukia's design is frankly boring and ugly. The colors do kinda match a little, because they're all washed out greys and purples, but nothing really makes them pop. It's just Rukia with gray hair and 2x giant bug eyes.
This isn't touching the "plot", which... ngl is pretty awful and barely makes sense. The only thing that made sense in the whole movie was that Mayuri kept a spare brain in a jar in his office.
So we suffer through this and Ken is being an unrepentant asshole the whole time
Kinda like "mommy why do you like this" and babbling at random (bad) dialogue.
Then we watched 4, which he seemed to enjoy.
Just. There's a color scheme! It matters! Hell has all washed out colors with a main color scheme of yellow and purple. They chose it because those are comlimentary colors, but they're also the most likely to make you uncomfortable looking at them.
The human world is almost always shown with a warm orange tint on it, and even scenes there will sometimes be set against a warm yellow and purple background.
The character designs are decent - the Sinners are ugly, but in a way that at least makes cohesive sense. Shuren looks like a fuckin bad guy, and Kakuto looks like some chain gang asshole, so they both make logical sense.
And the shot composition is so nice. Even fuck off nothing scenes with like Karin and Yuzu have Rule of Thirds blocking or leading lines or asymmetrical balance.
A lot of this is just so you can fully see the Detailed Hellscapes, which is a nice touch.
I want to say this probably has to do with Masashi Kudoh. He was involved in both movies, but the contrast is sharp af.
So all this being said, after the 4th movie, Ken actually wanted to watch more of the main series, which was nice
He had left off just before the Goodbye Halcyon Days ep, so we watched that. He was like "...who would she fall in love with a million times tho?" We gotta work on his reading/listening comprehesnion.
