Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
[Boku No Hero Academia] Okay I just watched up to episode four and I have a SERIOUS question and I apologize if my tone is a little brusque so perhaps do not open this if you feel it would be a sensitive matter for you
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
To review the circumstances I feel are relevant
- the protagonist Midoriya meets this female student also taking the entrance exam, who turns out to be named Uraraka. As he is tripping, she touches him, showing that she has some kind of telekinetic ability ("antigravity"?). He becomes suspended in midair and then she "releases" him harmlessly
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
- a large machine (falls or treads) upon Uraraka, crushing her legs underneath. She remains in this position for the time being seeming to be helpless indefinitely barring intervention. She is the only person harmed in this way, everyone else running away or out of range in the first place
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
- Midoriya unlocks his powers to jump up and punch away the machine. There's nothing underneath him up there in the air, so he begins falling. right when he is finally close to Uraraka, she slaps him, rendering him immobile and then once again releasing him to harmlessly fall
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
WHAT THE FUCKING HELL IS GOING ON HERE? WHY CAN'T URARAKA JUST POWER THE MACHINE UP OFF OF HER IN THE FIRST PLACE? Even if she can only reduce gravity to zero instead of pushing objects all the way up actively working against gravity, surely she could have done this back when the machine was falling, right?
SHSLPathologist
she was already wearing herself down quite a bit. since she used it prior to the exam beginning (upon meeting him) she went into the exam with a little less. besides that, the other machines were significantly smaller
SHSLPathologist
after she saved Midoriya, she barfed rainbows due to censorship
SHSLPathologist
using her power so often and for so long, also depending on what she's moving, makes her nauseous
SHSLPathologist
she'll get better, but yeh, you're only on episode four
yeah she basically had worn herself out; most of the characters' powers have downsides that limit them
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
Okay see the notion of a limit itself doesn't bother me so much
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
but like out of ALL the powers and abilities we've seen so far
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
her overall type of ability is the MOST suited to this specific type of situation
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
Like, we saw Bakugou get bound by the slime monster thing and not able to explode his way out of it. fine that made sense because it was a liquid probably resistant to fire
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
or like if laser beam crotch boy got pinned by the monster I'd understand
SHSLPathologist
navel
SHSLPathologist
(annnd he gives himself an upset stomach)
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
NAVEL BE STRONG... BE STRONG FOR MOTHER...
SHSLPathologist
also, I think the thing with Bakugou was he requires his sweat, but like... the slime monster was absorbing that? Also, struggling to survive/suffocating, he probably didn't think about taking advantage of this slime absorbing said secretion to make it explode
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
but to me it's just like a person whose ability was breathing under water almost drowned and had to be saved by Deku
in the character write-ups they do specifically talk about uraraka's power downsides (and those of the others)
(from the manga)
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
Yeah suffocating may not have been a good time to use a power that burns oxygen
SHSLPathologist
anyway, not denying that Uraraka's abilities might've been the best for the situation, and like you said, she was the only one that got pinned. Still, panic and a nauseous mind do not make for a good combo
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
That's the other thing like I can understand why none of the other characters helped out such as Glasses (Iida?) specifically thinking "maybe I should... nah" but none of them getting pinned? Like she's the single worst at this particular task in the entire group?
SHSLPathologist
the point of the exam was to test the new students as heroes. Iida didn't want to bother because the robot was said to be 0 P even if another student was at risk. Meanwhile, everyone else gathered points mainly by eliminating the scored enemies which isn't very promising
SHSLPathologist
and as we see from Deku's perspective, she was the only one in the zone of the robot as opposed to everyone else
and yeah i looked it up, uraraka's power has a weight limit of around 3 tons
๐Ÿฆˆsแด sสœแด€ส€แด‹
i think the 3tons is after she trains it though so at that point i'm not sure if she could do anything near the size of what hits her
๐Ÿฆˆsแด sสœแด€ส€แด‹
because i know there's a specific training session later on that's for the purpose of her being able to safely use her quirk on larger objects
SHSLPathologist
hoooly balls yeah she ain't moving that bot
SHSLPathologist
but yeah, she was struggling and concentrating even to lift the smaller bots, likely pushing her already low limit
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
There are so many other ways this could have been done where an unlimited gravity power would have been helpless anyway though. even just a robot tightly grabbing her in its encircling claws would have been enough. or someone else got crushed and Midoriya saves them but Uraraka is still the only one who thinks to save Midoriya
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
I also don't really understand the point of a concept as complicated as "gravity power... but it's limited so it wouldn't work in this situation that otherwise appears extremely amenable to a gravity power"
๐Ÿฆˆsแด sสœแด€ส€แด‹
it's called zero gravity but it's more like telekinesis in practice
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
...as telekinesis... I will tentatively... accept that a limit is a reasonably intuitive concept...
it's because everybody's power has a limit
in the classic comic book "every character has that one weakness, like superman and kryptonite"
her power isn't unlimited
๐Ÿฆˆsแด sสœแด€ส€แด‹
like also . . . they're children. the show is Literally About Them Learning Their Powers so you know.
๐Ÿฆˆsแด sสœแด€ส€แด‹
it's very possible sher doesn't have enough control to handle gravity on a large object
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
but deku's a child and he can punch away the robot...
๐Ÿฆˆsแด sสœแด€ส€แด‹
deku's power is superstrength (sort of)
deku's limitations are a major element, keep watching haha
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
Also if it's THAT dangerous a large object [a] why are they putting this in there with The Children [b] why did everyone BUT her get away from an object that large
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
okay actually I guess [A is answered by the nurse's existence but still.
and yeah, this is a series where training matters and the adults are actually more competent than the high schoolers
really i understand where you're coming from but this kind of stuff does get addressed over the course of the story
SHSLPathologist
yup
SHSLPathologist
yup
SHSLPathologist
indeed, you just have to give it time
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
Where I'm really coming from is "this girl's entire character traits so far are that she has gravity powers, but apparently not strong enough to save herself, and this is the first time Midoriya has talked to a girl his own age the entire franchise, in his own words" so it just left an EXTREMELY bad taste in my mouth
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
Though like again weakness on its own is not a problem like Midoriya himself is over here breaking three limbs
SHSLPathologist
there's an episode too that briefly explains how the quirk of each individual can even be misinterpreted
SHSLPathologist
mhm
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
Though like it's also to be fair a short appearance either way
SHSLPathologist
Midoriya's a quirk-less boy who is given a powerful quirk. there's waaay going to be consequences, but like, his impulsiveness to save people is another thing
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
but I'm just like "why does she have PRECISELY the amount of gravity power where she could save Midoriya twice but not avoid getting crushed in the first place" SO AT LEAST... IF THIS THEME OF LIMITATIONS IS CONSISTENTLY APPLIED TO ALL THE CHARACTERS... I'LL CALM DOWN A LITTLE
๐Ÿฆˆsแด sสœแด€ส€แด‹
it is
it is
SHSLPathologist
it is
SHSLPathologist
even the nurse's healing isn't unlimited and you'll learn how it actually works
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
THAT'S A SINISTER PROMISE...
SHSLPathologist
HEHEHE
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
Honestly I'm still keyed up because I was really triggered by the Shinjuku scene in P5A this weekend
SHSLPathologist
but yeah, quirks are cool, but they only do so much
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
So I am just... ready... to lash out...
๐Ÿฆˆsแด sสœแด€ส€แด‹
the sexism inherent in it being ochako that needs saving is a valid criticism, but like. the power limitations aren't the problem there. it's just bad, sexist writing.
yeah it's not just the girls who deal with power limits
SHSLPathologist
yeaah and P5 is a whole other can of worms
Be Maki-Mine ๐Ÿ’˜
Maybe I should have just opened with sexism from the beginning haha beCAUSE I JUST DON'T LIKE HOW YOU HAVE IIDA AND BAKUGOU AND MIDORIYA AND NAVEL AND THEN... URARAKA LYING ON THE COLD HARD GROUND...
