The building is the Warner House. Construction was finished in 1718.
Just Lore
The only item that's been in the house since it was first inhabited is one of my favorite items.
Just Lore
a mummified caribou head.
Just Lore
It never moved from that spot, so they were able to see what the original paint was behind it.
Just Lore
They used that to match a color to paint the rest of the entry hall.
Just Lore
the view from the front door.
Max
Ahhhh

That stairway was meant to be like a piece of furniture. It was a statement piece. It was also designed with taller steps to force people to walk up and down more slowly.
Just Lore
That green color was one of the lowest colors they found under layers of paint.

The virtual tour continues in the dining room.

I love that fireplace. Those tiles are all original to the house.

A couple of the trinkets on top are souvenirs from the Marquis de Lafayette's visit to Portsmouth.

These portraits are all originals.

The one of the girl (Polly Warner, 11 years old when it was painted) is apparently famous.
Just Lore
The women (LtoR) are Mary MacPheadris and Sarah Wentworth. The guys are Nathaniel Warner, Nathaniel Sherburne, and Nathaniel Warner.
Just Lore
The photos are dark because there are no electric lights in most of the house. The lighting is almost 100% sunlight through the windows.
Just Lore
If you want to see close ups of anything let me know!
Max
This place is so cool! I love the portraits.
Just Lore
The big ones were painted by Joseph Blackburn.

Just Lore
Lol ikr
Just Lore
It's right inside the doorway, too.
Just Lore
So you walk through the door, look to the left and BAM mummified head.
Just Lore
Supposedly it was a gift from Indians, though.
Just Lore
They don't know for sure, though.

Just Lore

The painter was also the best fabric painter around at the time... Until he taught someone else and that guy stole all his business.
