I’d like a village as a compromise, but in villages that are anywhere near a town all the shops and pubs have closed, so you have to drive into town for everything. When it’s like that, the village has no advantage over being isolated.
We are about a half-hour by car from any meaningful civilization, even though we are only 50 miles from Philly and 75 miles from New York City. Works for me.
Our closest town is just 10 minutes, but there isn't much there. Next closest is 20 minutes, and there a lot there. Bu the nearest real grocery is a half hour.
our village is 6 or 7 miles from two towns, but has two pubs, a village shop, a butcher, a church and a motor engineer. We are very pleased. Also a nice village hall. There are a couple of fish and chip vans, an artisan baker's van (weekly) and a mobile post office that call.
