You know, I've asked my mom-in-law about this, about why she does it. She said that other than the fact that people do change over time (which...fair), oftentimes when something is really important to you personally, you really want to share your enthusiasm with others.

/nod With mom-in-law, her family has already said "not interested" so she doesn't really talk about it with them. I've made minor noises of interest from time to time so she knows she can bring it up. So I guess it depends on how stubborn the person is about wanting to talk about it.
Oh I was at a religious-affiliated college too until the money ran out. But I was already reading a lot of shit before that and could have and occasionally did teach the World Religions class myself
That's a lot like the guy who ran my Comparative World Religions class in college. He was a Jesuit priest who had actually learned how to read ancient Greek so he could read the Bible before all the translations.
archaeology grad student here & religion is absolutely FASCINATING when you put it in terms of culture (also being able to read ancient greek & biblical aramaic is completely useless in the modern world but man it makes understanding old bible translations so much fun)
One of my favorite weird medieval things is Saint Guinefort who was not a Saint according to the Catholic Church, but literally no one cared because it was the Middle Ages and they did what they wanted
