[ uspol ] barbara bush has passed away! i have a lot of thoughts about it. they probably won't be popular in this space but oh well.

dried squid.
barbara bush was a fairly remarkable woman. her commencement speech from '95 was pretty inspirational for me.

dried squid.
in a time where AIDS was ravaging the country, barbara bush had fairly common sense views on the illness. she also condemned the republican party for wanting to put LGBTQ folks and abortion on the party ticket, because personal matters shouldn't be political ones.

dried squid.
she championed literacy and learning disabilities in schools and actually, you know, did stuff to combat those problems in the country rather than just sit around and do nothing.

dried squid.
that being said! she obviously had some problems. she's a white woman in a political dynasty that really did some fucked up shit, particularly her dumbass son 43. complicity is a word for it.

dried squid.
but man. i don't know. i felt sad when i found out she passed away.

dried squid.
but people like this passing away always brings people out and silos form, particularly in this political climate.

dried squid.
and a lot of the good things barbara bush did are being overshadowed by the GOP as a whole, and that's kind of sad to me, considering her legacy is far wider and much farther reaching than the party ticket.

dried squid.
but i also feel like some criticism is valid.

dried squid.
it's a complicated thing, when someone dies, i suppose!

dried squid.
i remember when justice scalia died and i said i was sad about it and people literally ripped my throat out because i said he had great opinions on fourth amendment defendant rights and i hope barbara bush's legacy is afforded more tact, i guess. lmao. idk. just some musing on this morning.

MOVING
i bet those same people who ripped into you about scalia also love Ruth Bader Ginsberg..... who was one of the most devastated people about Scalia's death, so you know.

MOVING
My point is, I hope you don't get shit for mourning Barbara Bush's passing. I don't have strong feelings on her personally, but a death is always sad

RANNI
people are complex, as a whole, and people are often uncomfortable with that complexity

dried squid.
MOVING
: People who ripped me about Justice Scalia also don't understand that RBG (a personal hero of mine) is absolute garbage on Fourth Amendment jurisprudence and has helped undermine defendant's rights for 20 years lmao like.

dried squid.
putting people on pedestals is always a bad idea because they're people.

dried squid.
RANNI
: true true true

RANNI
I didn't know much about her, so I don't have much in the way of feeling about her death. I see why people both liked and disliked her, and I think it would be better if we could reconcile that sometimes people can do both good and bad and stand for one thing we agree with while opposing something else we would rather they not

RANNI
there are very few true saints and very few true devils

StupidSexyV⚠der
i have a good about of respect for her. i think bush sr well be following her soon.

dried squid.
i guess the purpose of this plurk is struggling with how to reconcile the good and the bad, because i absolutely do not want to support complicity, but i also feel wrong demonizing someone who legitimately did a lot of good for all people.

dried squid.
so
it's a weird thing.

dried squid.
my biggest criticism of barbara bush is her treatment of anita hill. her viewpoints on Black women are absolute trash. and i don't believe her to be a feminist at all.

dried squid.
but plurk is also probably not the place for that conversation. i'll probably delete this later. lmao. i just needed to sort out some thoughts!

Rᴀɪɴᴇs
they're good thoughts tho

нᴀωкє иσ
nah these are good thoughts

Lesbian👻Ewe
I'm glad you posted these thoughts tbh. People can try to trash your thoughts but they're always balanced and the world needs someone who can see more than just good or bad in a person's legacy.

Lesbian👻Ewe
your opinions are important to me even if we end up having different viewpoints

Lesbian👻Ewe
(which so far, on scalia and Barbara, I don't think we're that different but anyway...)
