so like in my cohort there's a decent bit of diversity. We've got people who came from other countries to study, I'm latina, there's a black woman who already does most of the mentorship that would be considered a requirement for the scholarship

and there's one guy of polish descent whose family spent some time in Cuba

so he identifies as being Cuban even though HE IS THE WHITEST WHITE DUDE

and then in the group after mine, there's a white-passing biracial man who received the scholarship -- and no hate on him because HE IS THE NICEST GUY, but he kind of got it because all of them are super white and he was the closest thing they had to "diversity"

I haven't met the incoming group yet, but people said the open house event was pretty white too and I was soapboxing for like an hour about how that is hard-line bullshit

when I was doing my undergrad work at the school I affectionately call "ghetto uni" now, I knew a white guy who was going on an MLK scholarship just because we didn't have white students

and the MLK scholarship was for people who could prove minority status. In a population where the student body was like 4% caucasian or something at the time, he qualified

and I mean -- when there is NO white representation, it's easy for the conversations to be like "FUCK OUR WHITE OPPRESSORS" and there's definitely a place for that? But things tend to be more civil when EVERYONE is represented
