So they’re saying that Spielberg just gutted Ready Player One’s plot and changed just about everything about the story other than the very very core premise, and that in doing so he made it actually watchable

I did hear that they added a new female character who wasn't a love interest, dead in backstory, or pretending to be a dude the entire story.
