[Annihilation/spoilers] So I went and saw the movie last night and A) it wasn't what I expected B-) it managed to get down two things that scared the bejeezus out of me
Pythonmelon
Like to the point where I spent the rest of the evening discussing and joking about it hoping to diffuse the issue only to wake up from an apparent panic nightmare two hours after I went to bed
Pythonmelon
I can see why people could like the movie, see why people hate it, for me it was just... eh
Usagi
Apparently the director....didn't...read the book at all
'why would you make a movie based on a book and refuse to read the book' I sure don't know but that answered some questions for Meeeeeee... :/
Pythonmelon
everything from the point they entered the shimmer to the point that Portman reached the lighthouse was pretty damn cool and interesting
Pythonmelon
ah boy
Pythonmelon
I read about some of the differences and some I can make sense of (Like the tech and naming characters) but others are... eh
Usagi
ye
so movie was still rad and cool for plenty but I'm betting arm and leg that anyone comparing it to the book is in for a time ffff
Pythonmelon
Not a huge fan of it going fuckin 2001 nuts at the end
Pythonmelon
I don't mind that kinda stuff, but it's not what I really hoped for from this movie and while it explains what happened, it goes utterly off the rails and gets way too fuckin loud
Pythonmelon
I like the music and the way it starts with the sorta sad guitar and gets more distorted towards the end
Pythonmelon
I liked the visuals for the most part, how the camera doesn't ever stay still but it doesn't get shakey
Pythonmelon
I wish there was more to the tattoo thing, but I like that it wasn't too present to be annoying and not too subtle to go unnoticed
Pythonmelon
the colors were refreshing, the creatures were interesting (The deer especially)
Pythonmelon
And I can respect it not shying away from brutality, though it's a little much when it comes to Anya's death
Pythonmelon
this movie managed to find 2/5 things I'm fuckin horrified of and put them right up on the screen, done supremely well
Pythonmelon
but also... nightmares
Pythonmelon
the scene with Kane cutting the guy open and sticking hid hands right up in his moving, living guts was a big giant fucking Nope for me
Pythonmelon
And the bear was So fucking cool and scary as all fucking hell I'm not scared of bears, or the dark, or skulls or gore or whatever
Pythonmelon
but a predator mimicking someone's voice/screams for help scare me right down to the core
Pythonmelon
the impersonal nature of it and the fact that it makes those sounds literally every time it opens its fuckin mouth had me A Big Spook
Pythonmelon
my major problem, aside from a slow beginning and the super nutballs 64 ending was the characters
Pythonmelon
They were all so bland
Pythonmelon
I feel they were defined too hard by why they were there, had very little personality, and ranged from "eh" to unlikable
Pythonmelon
that's a lot of fault to the way they're written and directed though. They talk like fuckin Zach Snyder mixed with Christopher Nolan characters
Pythonmelon
uninterested, 'deep', more about logic over reason and emotion to the point where it's used in stupid places for no reason
Pythonmelon
And if they were more interesting, it would have made the deaths better and the contrast between the beginning, the end, and them slowly going mad much better
Pythonmelon
I think Ventress and Anya probably got to be the most interesting because the former was meant to be a little off compared to everyone else and the latter at least got to show some god damn emotion and had some character
Pythonmelon
Josie was at least cute and useful and I liked her not dying brutally
Pythonmelon
Cass had... a backstory
Pythonmelon
Kane had like 2 seconds of not being a husk and even then he was bland as plain vanilla animal crackers
Pythonmelon
And I really did not like Portmans character
Pythonmelon
at all.
Pythonmelon
I see what they tried to do with her as an "arc" but the way everyone talks kept it from happening. I had no feelings for her. I couldn't sympathize, couldn't relate to, I couldn't even hate her. She was an uninteresting mystery at best and an annoyance at worst
Pythonmelon
And that's kinda me thoughts overall on the movie. Okay in the middle, could have been better, eh to ugh everywhere else
