That in the original cut of the movie, he dies so very, very hard.

But then some exec or some focus group were like "bweehhhh" and they hastily cut together a re-shoot where he doesn't die.

i feel like he easily could have died and it not change a whole lot about how the rest of the movie progressed, so it could easily have been a "nah" on death

but i don't know if I'd chalk that up to "we were told to keep him alive", when "it didn't add anything to actually kill him" works too

since i can't really imagine anybody in the film being too broken up about it in the way most of the other end-movie deaths did

ehhh i think they kept him alive for t'challa to make the decision to bring him back to the lab and risk wakanada being exposed as character development

so yeah tl;dr: i don't think your feeling is off-base, but right now i don't know enough about behind the scenes for this one to assign motive

When they did the "put me back in" part, I was like "Oh, boy, he's toast."

Like, he's gonna stop the ship from getting out of the border, then they're gonna break the window, everything's gonna explode, that's it.

Then they broke the window and he just kinda. Ran away.
