I am not sure. I don't think Len expected Mick to take him seriously on the leave part.

He's thinking that the longer Mick stays on the Barge, the more chance there is he might backslide and become an inmate and be trapped. And the whole reason Mick is on the ship is because he's aiming for a deal Len doesn't want. So he thinks he's saving him.

But Mick agreed to not take that deal, and he means it. And he's actually been doing much better
