Every Christmas, I buy expensive gifts for our nieces and nephews. Or we hand them money. This few weeks, some major family thing happened and I realized I shouldn't do that anymore because these kids are going to be adults in 3-4 years. This year's gifts are going to be about self-reliance and it ain't fun shopping for things like this.

i mean it's good to realize sooner than later but still. you can still get them a nice giftcard to their fav store or something, not a lot, like maybe 25 to 50 so they can get one or two things

Yeah, we've always done gift cards. We probably won't do it this year. I think because we grew up in a very different time where self-reliance was a major thing, and then these incidents showed how glaringly spoilt and unprepared they are at even the simplest of things.

I think scaling back on the gifts in the upper teens is ok actually - it signals they are no longer kids - we shower the little ones and gifts are more modest for adults

Oh yeah, I'm going to town with my gifts for toddlers. They're getting all the cool stuff

yo, as an adult I love getting socks for christmas. My aunt always gets me super cute fuzzy socks. last year they were fuzzy panda and penguin ones

we offered ours to come work for us for that very same reason but they think that they don't have to work because family monies will last forever . we are not bailing any of them out of jail when the day comes.

I love magic erasers - the water here is so awful it stains the tub... and those things are all that gets things clean. Also, maybe some useful things, like books?
