good awful read

this was really interesting, and my takeaway was actually probably different from what was intended, if only because i zeroed in on the demographic that was utilizing the app in question -- mothers

especially single mothers or mothers with disabilities or disabled children

because it makes me think of how this is generally the same demographic that also gets sucked into mlms, aka pyramid schemes, like mary kay and tupperware

and i guess it was just interesting to contemplate the way capitalism pretty much directly preys on them

yeah, homemakers and moms get the joy of feeling guilty that they aren't contributing to the family income and being pressured to spend more money on whatever

the opening theme of "The Jetsons" has the dad pulling a couple bills out of his wallet and his wife snatching away the wallet with her outstretched hand

I'm not sure if it's still a thing where wives are expected to do all the shopping and maybe buy a fur coat for herself

but it was a major trope in media when I was growing up

and you combine that guilt and pressure with isolation and you end up with women desperately trying to sell pampered chef or smth to help pay the bills

and irritating the shit out of any friends they might have by trying to sell to them because no one else buys it

(my sister-in-law was/is? very into mlm crap she tries to sell to my mom)
