NEVERWHERE BY NEIL GAIMAN
アタシ♔再生産
I mention it every time this kind of thing comes up but I just really love that one

got an interesting world and characters and the ending does a thing I have wanted to happen for a long, long time in stories like it

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was a big part in shaping my sense of humor and what appealed to me as a writer I think

iirc you were recced my fave last time, so: right now I'm really enjoying the Paradox series by Rachel Bach. It's about a female space marine/mercenary who is drawn into a galaxy-wide conspiracy/cover-up. Lots of twisty loyalty changes, mystery, and mind-breaking aliens.

I'm reading a bunch of N.K. Jemisin's work lately and it is WONDERFUL. I just finished the Dreamblood Duology, a pair of novels set in a world roughly inspired by Ancient Egypt, where a rich desert city that worships a Goddess of Dreams, and can draw various powers from human dreams in order to use them to fuel magic, is struggling under a corrupt Prince
Teeff
Good Omens is my fave forever

I recommend the Emperor series by Conn Iggulden - I'm on the last one now - it tells the story of Ceasar, from boyhood to death
Teeff
it's REALLY gripping and interesting, and watching his relationship with Brutus dissolve from basically his brother to what they inevitably become is fascinating

The Graceling series by Kristen Cashore! Or Incarceron's series by Catherine Fisher.
Teeff
he tries to keep real history there, too, and has a note at the end of each book explaining what really happened and what he used creative licenses on

Man, favorites. I end up rereading Finder by Emma Bull a lot. Recently, I've DEEPLY enjoyed the Bartimaeus Trilogy. For humor, you can go wrong with Pratchett, but if you go wrong far enough it tends to get right again. Bujold's Vork saga is great but an Investment
YawningDodo
Anything by Jasper Fforde but especially Shades of Gray. It takes place in a future society where everyone is colorblind to some extent and there's a caste system based on what amount of color they can see.
YawningDodo
It's absolutely masterful how he slowly reveals this world to you from the perspective of a narrator to whom it's all perfectly normal, and it's funny and frightening and sad and wonderful.
