Jaetopus
Saw Wonder Woman last night and while I do think it's a good movie, my feelings are... conflicted. [probably some spoilers in here]
Jaetopus
I just came out of it so depressed
Jaetopus
like, yes, Diana eventually decided to fight for love, but with the explicit acknowledgment that humans REALLY don't deserve it
Jaetopus
and it's just like... damn, yeah, we suck and we ARE destroying the world, and Ares was probably kinda right
Jaetopus
I did totally go OMG THAT'S DAVID THEWLIS as soon as he showed up, though. Good to know my David Thewlis detector is still working after all this time
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
Yeah I thought about that a lot, because that's a huge Sailor Moon theme as well: enemies challenging her that humans are corrupt and fallen and don't deserve to be saved (it's an old old theme really) but she comes out of it with "I still believe in them" instead of Diana's "you're right but"
Jaetopus
right? like in my head, I'm most comparing this to the first Captain America movie cause a lot of the themes are similar
Jaetopus
naive yet enthusiastic young person leaves their sheltered life to fight for the good of all only to lose a lot of precious people in the process
Jaetopus
but Steve was fighting for people because they DID deserve it, while Diana is fighting because it's her duty whether they deserve it or not
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
I dunno, you could argue his sacrifice galvanized her to action BECAUSE it was proof humans can deserve it
Jaetopus
I meant Steve Rogers, Captain America, sorry
Jaetopus
too many Steves making suicidal plane attacks
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
hahaha
Jaetopus
(I actually commented on that to my brother in the theater, like 'man, Steves need to stay away from planes in super hero movies')
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
still, you could argue Diana saw proof that there were glimmers of good, above and beyond her duty
Jaetopus
funny aside, watching the credits, there was a Steve Rogers that worked on Wonder Woman. I wonder if he got teased at all
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
not just his sacrifice, but the comraderie of their group, etc.
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
ahahahaha i bet he did
Jaetopus
but doesn't that skirt dangerously close to 'she wouldn't have been a hero if not for the guy'?
Jaetopus
because, I mean, you're right, her turning point is all about him telling her he loves her, but I dunno, but so is she fighting for humanity as a whole or just for the memory of that one guy who might have loved her once and now she's doing this for eternity or however long she lives?
Jaetopus
it was just a very fatalistic movie, to me, and I suppose I should have expected as much from grimdark DC but I guess I was hoping it would rise above that from the good reviews it's been getting?
Jaetopus
I will probably be sticking with the MCU cause I like to come out of a movie wanting to be like YEAH! SUPER HEROES! WHOO! KICK ASS! not wow, the fate of humanity is to create pain and suffering
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
I honestly don't think it was because of the guy. It was 'coincidence' that it was him, it could have been anyone else showing nobility in battle.
Jaetopus
but she didn't say she believes in nobility. she specifically said "It's not about what they deserve. It's about what you believe. And I believe in love"
Jaetopus
right after the flash back (where she could suddenly hear him? I admit, that choice confused me) of him telling her he loves her
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
true. I don't know. It could be a mix, I suppose.
Jaetopus
I'm also generally not a fan of 'and suddenly they have sex' scenes, which at least was a fade to black in this movie. I know action films are bad at building relationships, but this one really felt like it came out of nowhere.
Jaetopus
like, a kiss out in the snow? sure, I could see that, it would be IC for both of them
Jaetopus
but 'happy interlude with dancing and singing yay' and then suddenly sex
Jaetopus
I guess movies today have a quota to meet, even if they're directed by women
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
haha yeah well...
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
Sailor Moon: Final Battle - VIZ MEDIA DUB
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
/had to
emet-sleep
that's about how I felt as well, Plague
emet-sleep
though I did not mention it in my own plurk b/c I got sidetracked by other comments lol
emet-sleep
I would have loved it if she did turn out to be wrong about Ares
emet-sleep
and realised that killing one man does not a world save
emet-sleep
(or one god, rather)
emet-sleep
which would make the movie even more fatalistic but...still make more sense than /gestures
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
But she was forced to realize that
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
that was the point of all his monologues about how he only planted ideas for weapons to kill faster - the idea of killing each other and war was all their own
emet-sleep
the problem is she realised that but then the movie undercut it by revealing "lol no, here's Ares and look! now he's dead and the world is better"
Jaetopus
yeah, I would say she realized that killing Ares would stop him from influencing humanity, but that they would still manage to kill each other without him, which was why she still needed to fight
emet-sleep
ehhh I didn't see it that way but to each their own
Jaetopus
which is where the 'yeah, ultimately humanity super sucks' comes from
Jaetopus
like, I took the soldiers getting along as just a few (really young on the German side, you'll notice) people realizing 'holy crap we just watched this insane shit going down and we should all be dead so now we're too relieved to be alive to hate each other'
Jaetopus
so a false betterment, if you will
Jaetopus
like when they would declare Christmas armistices and the soldiers would meet on No Man's Land to play football
Jaetopus
individual soldiers generally DIDN'T hate each other, they were fighting because it was what they'd been told to do
ᾣατεrƒεʅʅ
/nod that's how i saw it as well
Jaetopus
which, I will admit, did feel a bit cheesy but also added to the 'war is hell, look at these babies that nearly died'
Jaetopus
cause I swear none of those actors could have been over 20
