Arbieroo
a mad attractor:
Arbieroo
Arbieroo
"strange attractor" doesn't do the craziness of this thing justice!
sef_lopod
that one is trying to be a slinky composed of spiral galaxies.
sef_lopod
remembers doing strange attractors back in the late 70s or early 80s.
Άτροπος
It’s very interesting-looking
Arbieroo
spiral galaxies with 14 arms!
sef_lopod
not got that many arms.
Arbieroo
sef_lopod : but you're an , not a galaxy!
sef_lopod
this shouldn't be taken as a restriction on the number of limbs to which I'm entitled to aspire.
Lemongrass
too many would complicate dancing, but could come in handy when pushing people's bits into the right configuration.
Lemongrass
Arbieroo : it looks fascinating.
Arbieroo
sef_lopod : I agree; you should aspire to whatever number of limbs you wish.

::Bryony::
(woot) My husband would understand this far better than I can.
::Bryony::
It is pretty though!
Arbieroo
::Bryony:: : "pretty" is the main point!
sef_lopod
that attractor is not so much mad as having commitment issues.
Άτροπος
wonder why it’s called a strange or mad attractor.
Arbieroo
Άτροπος : 1. it's an attractor because no matter where you start you end up on it. 2. It's "strange" because it never repeats itself.
Arbieroo
sef_lopod : what's it not committing to?
sef_lopod
a single location.
sef_lopod
mind you, functions (iterative or not) which only have one output, regardless of input, are a bit boring. Eg f(x) = a.
Arbieroo
sef_lopod : those would be "stable points" not attractors.
sef_lopod
yes. But there are also unstable points of equilibrium. And then there are the hairy balls ...
::Bryony::
Displacement vs velocity vs mass vs time. We didn't cover that in high school physics. Our teacher was pathetic though.

::Bryony::
Arbieroo
::Bryony:: : It's actually a model of an oscillating spring, a simpler version of which (Hooke's Law) you might have come across in school, depending on at what stage you gave the subject up.
Arbieroo
sef_lopod : yes, one can have attracting and repelling stable points.
::Bryony::
We didn't study interesting stuff like springs or Hooke's Law. I packed in after second year high school. Our teacher wasn't bothered about keeping our interest. My hubby taught me about Brownian Motion in tea.
::Bryony::
Arbieroo
B-) or maybe hot!
::Bryony::
Place stroopwafels on a mug of hot tea or coffee, it makes them even more delicious. I treated myself to some of them at Tesco.

it is very pretty indeed. But... Oh, OK. That is why displacement is only 1 dimension.
Arbieroo
indeed.
PaulPossum
this is a pretty pretty attractor.
