ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Saw Assassin's Creed. I didn't hate it. (spoilery thoughts inside)
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
I was able to enjoy it a lot more than my friends who haven't played the games
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
If they make a sequel, I'm cautiously interested in our
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
That said, whoever thought the movie needed to be 90% present day with nothing but exposition-filled gobbledegook needs to be fired immediately
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Yes, I love the lore of AC and I'm glad they actually tried to include it, but they did it in the most boring, hamfisted way possible
casper 1995
ughhhh that whomps :C
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Whoever thought we needed to deep dive into present day Fassbender's backstory while throwing Inquisition Fassbender's much more interesting backstory as a throwaway line also needs to be fired
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
It would have worked so much better if it opened with pastbenders backstory, then cut immediately to presentbender when he desyncs due to the trauma
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Then drip presentbenders backstory at you as he loses his mind from continued exposure to the animus, versus him just randomly losing then regaining his mind willy nilly
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
The Templars were so boring oh my god, and they tried to put the focus on them with all of the exposition
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
I am still confused as to Marion Cottiards multiple abrupt heelturns at the end of the movie
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
She was the daughter of a Templar, and is a Templar herself. She seems to be completely aware of their cause and their goals, as well as aware of her dad's goals with the animus project
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
But then she reads dad's speech about eradicating free will and acts all betrayed, despite the fact I had been pretty sure she knew that already?
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Then she's all surprised when presentbender shows up and seems swayed to his all-too-sudden turn to the assassin cause. She also at no time alerts anyone he's there even though she has ample time
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
She should know damn well what he's there do to
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
But oh no, she's stunned he kills daddy dear and vows revenge! Despite not wanting to be a Templar anymore 5 minutes ago
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
The other poor assassins in the abstergo building get nothing to do. Hell, Omar from the Wire just gets to spout some weird cryptic bullshit at him and then they become friends at the end
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
I don't even know why the Templars were holding on to all those Assassins!
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Marion flat out says presentbender is the only one they need to find the apple. She says it twice in fact. There was literally no reason to have like 20 of them.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
All that said, when presentbender gets crammed into the super huge action figure stand arm and becomes pastbender, things get really interesting
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
The past scenes feel like video game cutscenes, with horse chases and mad climbs up the side of buildings to escape Templars coming right out of the video games playbook
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
It's a lot of fun to watch (though oh my god my theatre was loud)
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
The problem quickly became not enough time was devoted to the past to ultimately leave to engaged in the characters despite them having the far more interesting story
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
I really wish the story had built up differently, because it had the foundation to be a really excellent story
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Like I said, I wish it had opened up with pastbenders backstory. Something like him and his wife playing with their kids when the Templars show up and drag them out.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Or him out of the house and seeing them being dragged out of the house, trying to run to them and not making it.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Then the screen suddenly gets glitchy and it cuts to pastbender watching people getting burned at the stake from a distance.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Getting ready to do something rash, only to be stopped by the lady assassin with the chin tattoo. Then the screen goes white as someone screams and it cuts to presentbender and the animus.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Some present day stuff serving as infodump, then back to pastbender and then learning about the apple, actually giving some character development to pastbender and chin tattoo lady.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Every time he comes out there's a bit more of the bleed effect and he's losing his mind, but he's finding he's retaining some of pastbender's skills
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
More development is given to beardy scar Templar as he continues to thwart Pastbender's and Chin Tattoo Lady's Apple getting attempts. Maybe he has a name. Maybe he killed Pastbenders family.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Back in the present, Omar from the Wire and Presentbender talk about what Assassin's really are since Presentbender has no clue. Presentbender doesn't believe him at first, wants to believe Marion Cottiard
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
As he becomes more connected to the feelings of his ancestor (as his are slipping away from the bleeding effect), he starts to believe it more.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
He wants to be an assassin now, only its too late the Templars know where the apple is. His redemption is getting it back.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Oh somewhere in there he loses it to the bleeding effect completely and winds up in the ward where his dad is, and learning the truth of what happened in his past pulls him back together again.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
All of that potential is there, but no we have to talk Templar politics for what feels like forever. Or have assassins angrily stare at presentbender for reasons just barely explained
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
Hi my name is Kaitie and I have lots of feelings about a video game series
Artell
The templar versus assassin stuff and the present day plots are the worst parts of any AC game so it's disappointing they didn't learn from that when making the movie.
Artell
The games to me are about temporal tourism just like Abstergo intended. Abstergo is an evil company created by Ubi yet understands the games better than Ubi does.
ʙʟᴀᴄᴋɢᴜᴀʀᴅ ʙᴏʏ
See I disagree with you there. The Assassins versus Templars and how they seek out ultimately similar ideals is the crux of the series.
Artell
That's fine and that is obviously the meta plot of the whole series. I just feel like the less meta plot any single game has the better it seems to be.
Artell
To the point where the meta plot feels like it's dragging the game down whenever it strikes.
Artell
It doesn't help that in terms of game design and writing, the way the modern day stuff has been handled has been less than... adroit.
Artell
Take my favourite game, BF (haven't played Syndicate yet), where you're having a good time pirating the Caribbean but you are dragged away to hack computers in a dreary walking simulator/minigame.
Artell
Hence my consternation when hearing that the movie is 90 percent modern day stuff.
Artell
Also I'm very cross if they blew the Spanish inquisition setting on the movie and won't revisit it.
