There's no way a bunch of undergrads would get permission to run a study like that. And the shock study is largely considered extremely unethical in modern science.

yeeeeah. But then, that covers a lot of stuff they do in this show, and any other pulp type show as well. Realism? Ethics? Gets in the way of the story!

Leverage is mostly a gentler moral universe than the real one, but sometimes to make the villain work they have to go weird and dark, yeah

yeah, it's sometimes a very strange combination of, as you say, gentler than reality, and truly horrifically dark if you follow the implications through

The shock study was actually actors pretending to be shocked, and the study was being run on the shocker. The idea was to prove humans wouldn't follow orders to the point of causing serious harm to another.

...the hypothesis was proved wrong.
