we’re legends
HEY I need to tell you all about a free mobile game called Choices. uhhhh which sounds like the beginning of a paid advertisement but it is totally not.
we’re legends
Choices just came out a few days ago and is from my favorite mobile game studio, Pixelberry. Pixelberry has two other games, High School Story and Hollywood U, both of which I also love.
we’re legends
They do a great job of creating interesting characters and storylines while (with HSS and HU) keeping the tone light enough to match the format without sacrificing more serious moments.
we’re legends
Choices is a completely different format - it is, basically, three games in one, all of which are visual novels.
we’re legends
The first game, The Freshman, is a cute dating sim where you play a girl just starting out in college. Of her three potential love interests, only two are dudes, bc Pixelberry is pretty good about
we’re legends
inclusivity. (HSS is their first game, and you can see as the story unfolds how they started out okay - there are multiple important characters of color - and expanded their knowledge base as the game
we’re legends
went on and they got feedback. There is eventually an option to make a popular f/f pairing canon, and HU just flat-out has at least one f/f romance in their canon main story so far.)
we’re legends
The Freshman is definitely the most light-hearted of the three stories, with much college-kid drama and roommate bonding.
we’re legends
The second story, and my favorite, is The Crown and the Flame. It's a fantasy story about a princess (Kenna, whose name I keep misreading as Kenma, lol) whose kingdom is stolen out from under her.
we’re legends
If that sounds blah to you, do not be fooled: I almost didn't bother with it except for curiosity, and got wrapped up almost instantly. Of all of Pixelberry's stories, I think it has the most in-depth and
we’re legends
evolving character development in Kenna, who must learn to be what she has to be to not only retake her kingdom, but also become the queen her people will need after.
we’re legends
It also has an almost tabletop-gaming approach to how the outcome will eventually be calculated - various actions and whether or not you unlock certain scenes (with paid currency, natch) all contribute to how
we’re legends
Kenna grows in strength and how much success you have in gaining allies and troops and army power. I'm like six chapter in and IT"S SO GOOD OH MY GOD.
we’re legends
It's also darker in tone than everything else I've talked about so far - it ain't shy about the shit Kenna has to wade through and the violence people endure. it's also not terribly explicit, tho I should
we’re legends
mention that there is reference to offscreen torture.
we’re legends
The darkest game by far is Most Wanted, the third and final (so far) story. It's about two cops hunting down a serial killer in Hollywood.
we’re legends
I mean. The game opens from the perspective of one of his victims, whom I am pretty sure you cannot save regardless of the choices you make for her.
we’re legends
So that should give you an idea. So far the mystery is proving complex and interesting and I like the woman protag, Sam Massey (you switch perspectives between her and the guy cop, Dave Reyes).
we’re legends
I like Most Wanted almost as much as The Crown and the Flame, tho I'm somewhat less likely to buy the gems to unlock shit. It also requires you to remember details sometimes, so I can't ignore it for too long
we’re legends
or I will forget everything.
we’re legends
SO GO DOWNLOAD CHOICES AND PLAY IT REAL GOOD BC IT'S SO GREAT and I just really need people to to flail with okay.
cacopheny
I REALLY don't like visual novel type games, esp on my phone, but I wish it luck? ^^'
we’re legends
Heh, thanks. On its behalf.
