shepard used to be covered in scars, ranging from really tiny shit to much more noticeable crap

she didn't used to have a lot as a kid growing up on mindoor but it always... sort of meant something to her that she got her first real scar during the batarian invasion, a slash across her right leg

by the time she was given medical care days later it had set and she always thought that was gonna follow her forever. the day she lost her whole family and everyone she knew

then the subsequent two years were... a little bit of a mess. there were fights and there's a scar on the back of her neck from when her ponytail got cut off in a fight, where the knife knicked

she also had a couple self-harming scars on her left wrist but... that subsided when she joined the military as sort of a last-ditch effort to just get the hell away from everything

and after that it just became a fucking shitshow. weird cuts on her legs, arms, torso, like... by the time ME1 rolls around she's been military for a solid 10 years, including N7 training and the Skyllian Blitz

she has one on her cheek, technically a burn from a heat sink, one close to her left eye from claws, just fucking everything

AND THEN: they all disappear

for the canonblind, in me2, shepard dies. spends 2 years dead, brought back to life by this crazy-ass dude, but like... the parts of her that were saved were basically her brain and some organs

all her skin and a ton of her cells are regrown. so... yes, it's hers. but none of the scars keep. and it's really jarring for a long-ass time

because those scars started as painful reminders and turned into why she kept fighting. the reason that she always pushed forward because every scar was a victory that she never gave up

and it fucks her up for a long time. when she's in lockup between 2 and 3 I headcanon she cuts the scar back into her leg from Mindoir, because it's important to her that it's there

and it doesn't form the same or heal the same but it does it's job and that's what matters.
