Are you a lyric-listener or a music-listener?
moon837
Lyrics first
moon837
for me it's always about the words
moon837
my BFF is a musician and she's always pointing things like basslines out to me
moon837
which once someone draws my attention to a musical thing I know it's there, but before that I don't notice that stuff
moon837
i mean, I do, clearly - I hear it - but its effect is subliminal until someone else musically literate points it out
moon837
this is because I'm a writer and not a musician at all
moon837
when someone makes words do tricks I can see how it's done
moon837
when it's strings or horns I only gasp and clap my hands and never see the sleight of hand
dragon97
music first, but lyrics can be important too
banana61
both...? i find it difficult to appreciate the music properly if the lyrics are shit
banana61
but no matter how much i love the lyrics of something there's a limit to how much i can hear it if i'm not enamoured with the music itself

I'm a writer and a musician and I'm a music listener but I have difficulty picking out individual parts. I listen to the sonic gestalt.
mars853
yeah both here too tbh
words are easier for my brain to focus on bc of my linguist bg but i have legit listened to a song (with words) on repeat before just bc i liked one particular part of the music itself
gnu629
music first. sometimes i don't even understand what most of the lyrics say until way later
goose573
I listen to music a lot in the background so it all just kind of blends together, but I think my brain subconsciously focuses a lot on the lyrics because if I listen to a song often enough I tend to just
goose573
pick the words up./
lychee69
kind of both, but if the lyrics are crap, the music needs to be exceptional to make up for it
mouse841
i'm hard of hearing, so unless they lyrics are really clear, it's the music that jumps out at me.
worm377
I can do both, but it kind of alternates? I pick out bits of the music that I really like, but I also focus on the lyrics the first few times I listen to it too
mouse841
which is hilarious, because some of my favorite genres have almost unintelligible lyrics :/
worm377
just because I really want to hear what the song is saying and what it's about
worm377
and when I listen to songs in languages I don't speak or don't speak fluently, I focus even more
worm377
like, find the lyrics posted in the original language and in english and read along while listening
ferret25
Both, but bad lyrics ruin a song for me.
ferret25
Probably why I listen to so much German-language music - I have to concentrate to understand it.
