The Sword of Shannara wasn't... great. But the two that followed it were actually really good.

Yeah. Sword was a lousy LOTR knockoff but apparently Terry Brooks was just writing it to kill time in law school. From Elfstones onward it really improves

by the time i picked up sword of shannara i'd already been reading fantasy at or above the same reading level for years (i was like 15 or 16 i think)

Sword of Shannara is the most transparent of LOTR ripoffs but they do develop their own flavor after that.
