The Armenian Genocide is 100 years old today and there is still a very gross number of people who believe that this is a thing that didn't happen, including the US government
sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
3/4 of the Armenian people in the Ottoman Empire, 1.5 million people, were murdered for no other reason than because they were Armenian. with particular attention being paid to intellectual and cultural leaders
sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
First they murdered every man who could work via straight up execution or forced labor until they died, and then they forced the women, children, old and sick on a death march to the Syrian desert
sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
They weren't fed and were murdered or raped at the random whim of their guards
sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
to this day Turkey denies that the massacre was a genocide, and only 23 countries in the world recognize it despite the fact that every decent historian on the freaking planet, including Holocaust historians,,
sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
agree that this is absolutely the thing that happened.
sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
While the Turkish government did try some of the people involved in what they call "war crimes," the death penalties they'd been given for the crimes were wavied and they were all given amnesty
sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
and now Turkey denies the whole thing. /jazzhands
Whiskey Tango
Thank you for this post! My grandparents both fled the Armenian genocide and I've heard so many horrific stories of what they saw and who they lost during that time
Whiskey Tango
The fact that they managed to get out was frankly a miracle
sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
Ugh I'm sure you have. There isn't a lot of information out on this so you don't hear as much about it due to the number of countries that sweep it under the rug
sᴀʟᴛʙɪᴀɴ
and it's fucking horrifying
Maraich
I've been seeing it talked about on the news repeatedly
Maraich
So I do think the information is getting spread more

Hopefully.

My grandmother was the only one of her family to make it out alive.
snax
She was taken in by a Turkish family who hid her and helped her escape.
