There are a couple of definitions which are usually mis-translateted. For instance, "認知" in the original text was "acknowledge". This term is very tricky.
Then come with the definition of "Chinese". How do you define "Chinese" in Taiwan? From KMT's point of view, perhaps every one holding the "ROC" ID/passport is viewed as a "Chinese". But is it true?
2. The settlement between PRC and "ROC" (not necessarily Taiwan) is important. It was humanitarian action by Truman to ship those millions of Chinese to Taiwan in 1949. It needs to be resolved peacefully.
3. The best scenario is when PRC and "ROC" reach the agreement, then all "Chinese" in Taiwan declare their political inclination and return to PRC. The ones choosing to stay will declare they are Taiwanese.
4. I think, with the peace assured for the People of Taiwan, then USA will officially give the go ahead to convert the legal procedure for Taiwan's de-jure independence.
However, these intended steps are kept ambiguously (to protest USA's interest), Thus, you will never really know USA's actual intention until the actual events happen. The Sunflower Movement is a good example.
In PRC, they still play the translation game to brain-wash their people. The "acknowledge" term has been translated into "admit" in PRC textbooks. Thus, all PRC people believe USA is on their side.
PRC also brainwashes their people on the belief that "Taiwan is part of China (PRC)" since the kindergarden years. It is really hard to shake off that belief, especially the highly-educated intellects.
KMT did the same brainwashing on "Taiwan is part of China (ROC)" too. However, due to the democracy and people's waking-up, more and more people in Taiwan do not believe this concept anymore.
That is the subtle reason to produce the major difference between the People of Taiwan and People of PRC. Note, USA did declare "Taiwan is not part of PRC" via the formal state secretary Colin Power ...
Final note: with the old "Chinese" passing away or leaving Taiwan, I think eventually the Taiwanese people's collective voices will emerge and USA will "see" it.

"二戰完台灣人基於漢民族意識~是歡喜的跟中國擁抱" is the problem, which USA recognized it at that time. Note that Korea did not go back to the kingdom-era, and chose to become an independent nation. That is why USA helped Korea since
