I must have been sleepy, because it is very clear what is happening:
(20 x 10) + ((20 x 3) + (1 x 10)) + (1 x 3).

is Chinese maffs. They are similar except instead of drawing lines, they have you draw graphs and diagrams then discuss why you chose to solve the problem the way you did.
