[FB] So there was an incident recently locally with a police officer busting out a window and tazing a man because he refused to exit the vehicle during a traffic stop.

People are crying "but fourth amendment!!"

And sorry to say, there's a Supreme Court backed precedent to actually having to exit the vehicle when an officer requests you to. you can lock the car behind you if you want

And no, busting the glass and tazing wasn't exactly rational either, especially with kids in the back seat

I commented thusly to someone (with a link to a wiki article on the case) on FB and they're all "Well the constitution has been around longer so I'm gonna go by that"

.... yeah who needs facts, right?

Um because that's what the supreme court is for. Interpreting constitutional law.

nah that's definitely what the Supreme Court is for in the US too.

it's just that when Supreme Court judges make a decision that some people don't like, they get mad and try to accuse the judges of going against the spirit of the Constitution.

Yeah that happens with the High Court here.

Yeah, he should have, but... man, the Supreme Court has indeed screwed up many times before. Still, if a cop asks you to get out, you do it.

But... that was some overreacting on the cops' part, too.

And I can see why he didn't feel safe doing so, if they reacted that way.

I don''t like the ruling, but knowing your rights in interactions with police is important.
