I always assumed it was himself, in consistence with the narrative. On the other hand... it could readily apply to both him and Aeris, since he's old n' grey now and she never even got that.

So if he's bored and lonely (and at the risk of redundancy - alone alone, presumably, from the way the comic's playing out), that suggests many of the people he knew are gone already.
