RPers and Larpers: in a setting, would you prefer a nation to be gender blind, or have a history written in where one gender was oppressed, until they won their equality through proving they were equal?
muthafuckintrex
Basically suffrage in a fantasy setting.

I personally favor the former, because pretendy fun times

^^^ My logic.

yeah man i don't really wanna focus on real world issues in a fantasy setting
muthafuckintrex
That's pretty much the unanimous reply here and on facebook. I'll keep the nation as genderblind then.
the other side
...both those options sound shitty to me sorry??
the other side
why can't all genders be equal but different
1 in 6.77×10e18
How do you accomplish equal but different?
muthafuckintrex
Sorry, I meant genderblind in that they do not discriminate in terms of holding office, positions of authority, or militarily. I should have been more clear.
the other side
oh ok that sounds better
muthafuckintrex
I had the idea for a piece of history for a nation but it needed an already existing patriarchy to break down, otherwise it was just a person doing person things.
Tophcicle
i like the sound of genderblind better

I guess I'm the odd one out here but I prefer to see struggles like suffrage and gender equality mirrored in the fiction I consume
gremlin wife
I guess it depends on how big a role the backstory is going to play in what you're developing though?

I'd differentiate fiction and RP pretty heavily here.

It's one thing to read a story about that sort of thing, it's another to tell a player, "No, you can't effectively play a female fighter."
muthafuckintrex
I'm polishing the story points now; I'll paste them up when I am done.
gremlin wife
I don't think a fictional setting that has or had gender inequality in its history automatically translates to "no you can't effectively play a female fighter?"
muthafuckintrex
The Sangiuine Alliance was once a patria... Its only rough notes, but its an outline of what I intended.

It's a deliberate exaggeration. There are certainly times when those elements could have a place, but as a player and DM both I would rather those be exceptions rather than the standard.
muthafuckintrex
The only setting things relevant to the story is that the Sanguine Alliance is a bunch of kingdoms presided over by a High King, and that the Kreuzer are sea raiders from across the sea
gremlin wife
I like that history, Tyr. Personally, I'd keep it.
gremlin wife
And personally, as a player, I would rather play in a setting informed by something like this, but that's just personal preference.
gremlin wife
...I said personal a lot there. ANYWAY.
muthafuckintrex
Thanks Nella, I think I'll polish the story off anyway as a nice piece of fiction in its own right.
Tophcicle
oh man, i really like this premise, as either a game or a piece of fiction
Tophcicle
it's got room for future conflict and i'm really intrigued on where you'll take it
muthafuckintrex
Well me and my co-writer have decided to keep the fiction, make it an elf, and make it about fantasy racism instead.
