i wouldnt know about austerity. it looks to me like all that misuse was caused by the boom years, not the bust years. boom tends to misallocate resources.

austerity i.e. limits on government spending in order to pay debt owed [mostly] to Germany.

..and to adhere to deficit limits as part of belonging to the Euro. Otherwise, Spain could have used Keynesian stimulus to mitigate unemployment.

another artificial boom which got them where they are in the first place. the problem was the boom. kick the can and let the future take care of it. in the meantime, the select few get rich now.

eroded tax base, the Detroit municipal government kept spending and spending, funding its spending spree with borrowings. Now, it's bankrupt.
