Lovecraft probably would have found gender discourse spooky, not because of intolerance (I mean maybe also that because he could be pretty awful idk) but because gender identity is a feature of humans that's simultaneously a construct of external social forces and purely subjective

Like, i'm pretty darn confident I'm cis male but wtf does being male-gendered actually mean? There are a lot of traditional gender traits I emphatically reject, and even if I could pin down precisely what "maleness" is to me, it'll probably be at least a bit different for someone else (maybe very different), so...?

IDK how to frame gender in a way that doesn't ultimately boil down to "well I know what I mean" which is fine for identity, but for a social construct it's pretty bizarre and nebulous and difficult to express beyond "this is my vibe please respect it"
